Ernest Gubser, a devoted husband, loving father, proud grandfather, and great-grandfather, peacefully passed away on Saturday, November 2, 2024, at the age of 94. Ernest was a man whose strength, wisdom, and deep love for his family and faith left a lasting impact on all who knew him.
Born in Oberterzen, Switzerland, on June 24, 1930, Ernest's love for the mountains began early. He was introduced to skiing at the age of two, and his passion for the sport endured throughout his life. Ernest skied with great enthusiasm until the age of 80, reflecting the vitality and joy he found on the slopes. His love of skiing became a cherished family tradition, with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren all carrying forward his legacy on the mountains. Ernest's grandchildren and their spouses frequently traveled to ski resorts he once enjoyed, often bringing him maps of the mountains they skied, which he cherished deeply. His eldest great granddaughter, Charlotte Rae, followed in his footsteps, beginning to ski at the age of two—just as Ernest had. His love for the snow and the mountains will undoubtedly live on for generations.
Ernest also served as a Swiss Guard under Pope Pius XII from March 15, 1951, to June 30, 1953—a role that brought him great pride. His service in the Vatican was a manifestation of his deep faith and sense of duty to protect the Church and its leaders. This chapter in his life was one he spoke of with great reverence, and it was a defining experience that contributed to his strong sense of integrity and devotion to his beliefs.
In addition to his love for the mountains, Ernest's sense of duty and service shaped his life. He proudly served in the United States Army from January 13, 1955 to December 30, 1956, earning recognition for his discipline and skill. Ernest was a sharpshooter and was awarded the Good Conduct Medal for his exemplary service and conduct during his military service. These honors were a testament to his character, precision, and commitment to excellence, qualities he carried with him throughout his life.
Ernest is predeceased by his beloved wife, Rita Gubser, with whom he shared 66 years of marriage. Together, they created a life full of love, laughter, and cherished memories. Ernest was the proud father of Rose Mary Gubser, Theresa Minutello (husband Louis Minutello), Frank A. Gubser, (Diana Vodzak), and the late Ernest A. Gubser. He was the devoted grandfather of Christopher A. Minutello (wife Anna C. Minutello), Alexandra N. Gericke (husband Evan Gericke), Jacqueline M. Mulig (husband Ben Mulig), and the proud great-grandfather of Charlotte Rae Minutello, Emilia Grace Minutello, Lennon Mae Mulig, and Evelyn Jane Gericke. His family was the heart of his life, and he found immense joy in watching them grow, succeed, and carry on his values.
Ernest's legacy of love, service, and adventure will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew him. His spirit, his passion for the mountains, and his unwavering commitment to family, faith, and country will inspire generations to come.
Your family will continue to ski the slopes you once loved, and your memory will always be a beacon of strength, warmth, and love.
Rest in Peace, Dad and Papa
